Sorry for the lapse between posts, folks. Been extremely ill for the last few days (I'm ignoring the new years jokes, I don't drink.) and haven't had time to work on the ascii set. So it may be another week or so. I know... How hard can it be to type a few damn letters? They're special letters, I tell ya.

Merry Christmas! The 128x128 tiles are actually available for download in their full rez glory! Ben Collver has lent bandwidth and server space. Praise him with great praise! (New links to .gz versions added. Sorry about the wait. Ugh.)

Wuffles has written support for multiple views (A second window for the big tiles, that will run at the same time as the main screen display, which can use standard ascii etc.) Get it here! (This also has a fix for the pet overlay highlights for 96x96 with more supported soon!) A slew of other fixes are included as well...

I have an ezboard forum up now for feedback and suggestions. Here it is:

Posting here or emailing me (hexusdominar@*SPAMSUCKINABADWAY*hotmail.com) will be the quickest way to get a response. Emails should be sent with a title of "Absurd Tileset" or 128x or aesthetictech or something easily recognized by me.

The absurd tileset's history is sadly not one of epic heroism, tragic sacrifice*, or even breathy romance. (Although there is some regular old fashioned normal people heroism ;-)  )

I have really enjoyed the work of Jaakko Peltonen  on the Falcon's Eye project. As it progresses, I will continue to play it. Having said that, the isometric view hurts my eyes after a while, and updates are, due to the nature of having to write code for it, and I am sure other priorities... Slow. So I decided a few weeks ago to focus some of my obsessive compulsive energy and insomnia towards making the Ultimate Vanilla Nethack Tileset (Written in flames thirty feet high on a mountaintop). The results are here. It turned out fantasticly, if I say so myself. There will be updates as devteam adds stuff in the future, and due to my constant fiddling, there may be interim releases that are just tweaks to the completed art. But the tileset is done.  That's right... A 32bpp 128x128 tileset completed in TWO WEEKS. (Kneel before Zod.)

In keeping with the "Unique" Humor of nethack, there is a general theme of light heartedness to my tileset. Some of it may be obscure. Most people will not understand why there is a picture of Buckaroo Banzai representing the Quantum Mechanic, (Heck, most people will say Buckaroo Who?) and there are other obscure references everywhere. Expect to see appearances from other classic games. (Frobozz Magic foo Company and so on.) I would like to give special thanks to my muse** for her input on the new and improved Grid Bug (I'm a heretic for abandoning the Tron version, but the payoff is worth it to me.)

Usage:

Insert the following line into your defaults.nh file using a text editor:

OPTIONS=tile_file:absurdXX.bmp,tile_height:XX,tile_width:XX  (NOTE: XX is whatever version of the tile you are using. 64 for the absurd64.bmp etc.)

Give Special thanks to The Big Red Monkey for serving these files, and of course, drop by his site for all your Pagan Madman needs.
